It’s no secret that the step up to the Championship has been a big one for the 1st XI, not helped by visa delays impacting the professional.
Despite this, the side have battled hard, grinding out two big wins away at Westleigh and at home to Whalley Range and remain outside of the relegation zone.
The 2nd XI have gone unbeaten in May, conquering all before them. Highlights include coming back from the dead against Flowery Field and winning a cup fixture in the GMCL for the first time (away to Unsworth).
The 3rd XI season is still to fully get going, with only two league games completed which resulted in 1 defeat and 1 victory. Adam Fitton's side have kept themselves busy with friendlies, and congratulations to Harley Swann for his maiden senior 50 in a recent fixture vs. South West Manchester.
The much-travelled 4th XI's mission to get junior players used to senior cricket continues apace. Fixtures against Toft, Barnton, Prestwich and Ashton Ladysmith have provided ample opportunities for the juniors to impress. A tight 1 wicket win against Toft showed the maturing nature of the side, with U15s Henry and Jude in amongst the wickets.
It's been a strong start to their inaugural season for the Women's Team too. Playing in the newly formed High Peak Soft Ball League the side have won 2 out of their 3 completed games, including a last-ball thriller against neighbours Broadbottom.
Senior Monthly Awards
This season, we are running monthly awards for the senior sides and players, to give focus to their achievements.
Team of the month - May
Clearly, there can only be one winner for the month of May, and that is Liam Wright's 2nd XI!
Played 6; Won 6; Joint 3rd in the table, and delivering high quality, exciting cricket along the way.
Player of the month – May
3rd place – Paul Graeme Marks
Marksy has had a very solid May with the ball, with an uncanny knack of taking a wicket maiden in his first over of a spell.
His bowling in May has seen him bowl 23.1 overs, 4 of them maidens, with figures of 71-7.
However, and perhaps what snuck him into 3rd place, was his 1st XI cameo with the bat away at Westleigh, hitting 34*, in a partnership of 90. We’ll not pass comment on 2nd team batting performances (or lack of) from Paul.
Free pint for you, Marsky
2nd Place – Jordan Irons
Jordan has shown both sides to his game throughout the month, helping to get the side within sight of victory against Whalley Range and also being the driving force behind the crucial partnership with Marksy at Westleigh. Jordan scored a crucial 78 in that innings to get us a defendable total on the board.
What’s more, he has found his knees still just about work and he has snaffled 4 victims behind the stumps.
203 runs, 4 victims.
£10 bar credit for Jordan.
1st Place – Mike Scott
Following a tricky opening to the season, Mike Scott found himself in the 2nd XI. Since then, he's fought back with the character and skill we know he possesses in abundance, to deliver a hatful of wickets.
First, his spell vs. Flowery Field 2nd XI was a scintillating display of destructive bowling which delivered the Miracle of Mottram: Part 2. (10.1 – 2 – 33 – 6)
This was then followed up by a rip-roaring 4fer against Springhead. Naturally, this saw him promoted back into the 1st XI, where he took a further 6 wickets across 3 games and hasn’t looked back.
Overs 49.4
Maidens 7
Runs C – 152
Wickets – 16
Runs scored – 70
Top work Mike, enjoy your £20 bar credit.
Junior Round Up
After a largely freezing April, Junior Friday Coaching Sessions got back up to full speed in May, with it once again brilliant to see the pitch and patio packed. We remain, of course, absolutely delighted to welcome any new players who wish to join us on Fridays. Sessions start at 6pm.
We once again have two U9 teams competing in the league, and both have made great starts to the season. Our Mottram Reds side are currently top of the league, having won 10 from 10.
Our U11s (who are mainly U9s) continue to impress with their development and enthusiasm. They've won 3 from 4, so far.
The U13s have largely been curtailed by a mixture of rain and the ever-expanding football season. Just the 3 fixtures completed so far, with commendable displays delivered against Didsbury, Ashton and DSL.
After a slow start, the U15s are gaining some momentum, with some recent strong batting displays indicating there can be real optimism for the rest of the season. The U18s have only fitted in 2 games in between consistent rain-offs.
Junior Of The Month - May
This season, we will also be highlighting a Junior of The Month. This award will be given to the junior we feel has truly embodied the values of The Mottram Way, of wholehearted dedication to practice, enthusiasm for the game and for being a real team player.
Our Junior Month of The Month for May, is Niamh Bradburn.
Niamh is a key element of our U9s and U11s always making new team members feel welcome and included. She also in May, stepped up to play for the U13s for the first time. Overcoming nerves, she batted sensibly for the last wicket with Dan Dadge to almost steer Mottram to victory.
She put the team first, played straight and ran well between the wickets. As ever, she bowled a tight off-stump line too.
And, just to cap it off, she did a sterling job of promoting the club on BBC North West Tonight.
